PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of interference between a piston and a valve in a high speed rotation area, where an inertia force is increased, in constitution provided with a variable valve system and a variable compression ratio mechanism. SOLUTION: The control device comprises the variable valve system using a swing cam capable of continuously variably controlling the valve lift characteristics (lift/an operating angle and phase) of an intake valve; and the variable compression ratio mechanism using a dual link type piston crank mechanism capable of continuously variably controlling a compression ratio by varying a piston top dead center position. In a high rotation area, an inertial force is increased, displacement is effected by the clearance content of each part, and there is a fear of an interference between a piston and the intake valve, and therefore, the upper limit value of a valve overlap (during opening of the intake valve) is regulated to a low value in a high speed rotation area, and the upper limit value of the compression ratio is regulated to a low value in a high speed rotation area.
