PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer adapted to improve the transfer precision of a recording medium by varying the contact pressure of a pressing roller which presses to contact a paper feed roller between at a printing time when a thermal head is moved down and a non printing time when the thermal head is moved up. SOLUTION: A contact pressure varying mechanism capable of varying the contact pressure to the paper feed roller 5 is set at the pressing roller 6 related to the thermal printer. The contact pressure of the pressing roller 6 to the paper feed roller 5 is varied by the contact pressure varying mechanism between the time when the thermal head 1 is moved down to transfer the recording medium 4 at the printing time, and the time when the thermal head 1 is moved up to transfer the recording medium 4 at the non printing time.
