PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating device and a coating method which can ensure a stabilized coating under a wide coating condition and inhibit the occurrence of product defects. SOLUTION: This invention provides a coating device for applying a coating liquid to the surface of a strip-like material being conveyed in a predetermined direction. The coating device comprises a primary side bar extending in the width direction of a conveyance surface acting as a conveyance passage for the strip-like material, a secondary side bar positioned on the downstream side of the primary side bar and extending in parallel with the primary side bar, and an inter-bar liquid reservoir positioned between the primary side bar and the secondary side bar for reserving the coating liquid when being applied. The coating device and coating method are provided with coating conditions on both the primary side bar and the secondary side bar, such that the relation: W<SB>2</SB><W<SB>1</SB>can be established wherein W<SB>1</SB>represents an application amount of the coating liquid on the primary side bar and W<SB>2</SB>represents an attachment amount of the coating liquid after the strip-like material has passed through the secondary side bar.
