<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a practical lighting unit which uses a solid-state light emitting element such as a light emitting diode, and also to provide a projection video display device using the same. <P>SOLUTION: The lighting unit 1 comprises a light source 12 constituted by arraying LED chips 11, ..., and arranging lens cells 14, ..., on light projection sides of the respective LED chips 11 and a fly-eye lens couple 13 which integrate and guide light which is emitted by the respective LED chips 11 and made parallel by the lens cells 14 to a liquid crystal display panel 3. The LED chips 11 and lens cells 14 are rectangularly formed and match or nearly match the aspect ratio of the liquid crystal panel 3.
