PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately carry out the automatic stop and restart of an engine in response to a driver's request in stopping a vehicle.

SOLUTION: An automatic transmission mounted to the vehicle is constituted to be able to select a first shift mode of automatically changing a gear stage according to the operating state of the vehicle, and a second shift mode of changing a gear stage according to the driver's manual operation of an upshift switch 23 and a downshift switch 24. An engine control means 1 is provided with a condition correcting means 9 for correcting automatic stop conditions in a direction of making it hard to perform the automatic stop of the engine when the second shift mode of the automatic transmission is selected.
