PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning head which is compact, inexpensive and capable of operations in multiple modes and substantial safety operation using an internal LED light source, has various uses and is capable of operating with high sensitivity and high accuracy even for a medium of low contrast. SOLUTION: The scanning head to be used in a register mark detection apparatus for detecting a register mark on a web is provided appropriately for a relative motion between the web and the scanning head. Further, the scanning head is equipped with a photo-sensor and a first optical mask having an aperture for specifying a field-of-view footprint of the photo-sensor via the photo-sensor.
