PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a 4,5-dialkoxycarbonylimidazole from readily obtainable raw materials by a short process in a high yield. SOLUTION: The synthesis method comprises synthesizing the 4,5-dialkoxycarbonylimidazole represented by general formula (I) from a compound represented by general formula (II) [R<SB>1</SB>and R<SB>2</SB>are each an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an alkenyl group (a cycloalkenyl group or a bicycloalkenyl group), an alkynyl group, an aryl group, a heterocyclic group and R<SB>1</SB>and R<SB>2</SB>may be the same or different].
