<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a repeater which requires only a small number of frequencies needed to construct a network by using an optical signal of continuous wavelengths when the number of communication nodes that are actually housed is smaller than the upper limit of the number of housable communication nodes. <P>SOLUTION: This repeater 40 consists of 2<SP>n</SP>(n is an optional integer is zero or more) input ports 41-1 to 41-8, 2<SP>n</SP>output ports 42-1 to 42-8, wavelength splitters 43-1 to 43-8 provided corresponding to each of the input ports, wavelength combiners 44-1 to 44-8 provided corresponding to each of the output ports, and a plurality of optical waveguides 45 for connecting the number of input ports and output ports with 2i (i = 0 and 1 to n) as a unit between the wavelength splitters and the wavelength combiners so as to satisfy wavelength cyclic property.
