PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a impact absorbing type steering column device which can absorb a secondary collision energy of crew by the contraction in the axial direction of a steering column, and can perform a telescopic adjustment. SOLUTION: A steering column 20 supports freely rotatably a steering shaft and can be contracted in the axial direction, and a collision energy absorbing mechanism 40 is inserted between an outer tube 21 and an inner tube 22 of the steering column 20. The collision energy absorbing mechanism 40 is equipped with an energy absorbing member 41 which generates an energy absorbing load by a plastic deformation, and an engaging pin 42 which can be engaged/disengaged with/from the energy absorbing member 41 and can plastic-deform the energy absorbing member 41 accompanying the contraction in the axial direction of a set value or higher of the steering column 20.
