A film take-off roll(18) which draws film(12) from a storage unit(10). Film passes around at least part of the roll which acts in conjunction with a trimming unit(30) having one or more knives(32). The knife forms a support for the film during the trimming operation. The trimming unit(30) has two knives which form squashing knives(32) and are located along an edge of the film(12). Trimming can be adjusted according to the film breadth and position. The knifes move due to friction with the powered take-off roll(18). Film is initially stored on a reel(10) and between the reel and film take-off roll there is a film storage loop system(14). An independently driven roll(22) following the film take-off roll tensions the film in the area of the trimming operation. Trimmed film is subsequently laid on a flat surface, in particular a glass plate(16).
