1,069,319. Apparatus for oxygenating blood. MEDICAL MONITORS Inc. Sept. 17, 1965, No. 39770/65. Heading A5R. [Also in Division B1] Apparatus for oxygenating blood comprises a casing 10 carrying foraminous trays 20 which are mounted to pivot on bearings 21, 22 so that the trays may be rocked by a motor 28, the trays carrying envelopes 35 of a thin semi-permeable membrane which are arranged such that blood passed through the envelopes gives up carbon dioxide through the membrane to an exhaust 15 from the casing, and the blood receives oxygen through the membrane from a pressure source available at an inlet 14. As shown, the envelopes are inclined from the horizontal down towards the front 24 of the casing and the blood is gravity-fed from a reservoir (40), Figure 2 (not shown), through the envelopes 35 to a receptacle 44, from where it is delivered to the patient by a pump 43. In an alternative embodiment, the casing 10 is fitted in an inclined position relative to its base 11 and the trays are then mounted in the casing parallel to the top surface 13. |
