Method and device to limit the search scope in a speech recognition lexicon

Speech recognition method in which a memory (S) has M character pattern chains made up from N possible characters. The speech to be recognized is transformed into character chains. To accelerate the method only the first N characters of a pattern character chain and the character chain to be recognized are compared with each other and the probability of an identification calculated. For the remainder of the method pattern character chains are only selected when the probability of an identification is greater than a predefined minimum value. In this way all characters are compared with all character chains. An independent claim is made for a speech recognition device.
