PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for transmitting and receiving a pilot sequence in a mobile communication system using an STTC(Space-Time Trellis Code) is provided to maximize a data transfer rate. CONSTITUTION: If P numbers of information data bits(d1-dp) are inputted to a transmitter, the inputted information data bits are inputted to an S/P(Serial to Parallel) converter(611). The S/P converter(611) executes parallel conversion for the information data bits and outputs them to the first to the Pth encoder(621-1-621-P) respectively. Each of the encoders(621-1-621-P) encodes each information data bit in a preset encoding method and outputs it to the first to the Mth modulator(631-1-631-M). The modulators(631-1-631-M) modulate the signals outputted from the encoders(621-1-621-P) in a preset modulation method and output the modulated symbols(S1-SM) to their respective puncturers(641-1-641-M). The puncturers(641-1-641-M) puncture the modulated symbols(S1-SM) according to a preset puncturing matrix and output them to their respective multiplexers(651-1-651-M).
