An analysation instrument (70) and method of using it is disclosed. The analysation instrument (70) includes an optical configuration adapted to produce an annular beam of electromagnetic radiation having a central axis or plurality of beams of electromagnetic radiation wherein said plurality of beams are evenly spaced from a central axis; and a focusing reflector (78) having an internal reflective surface having an optical axis and one or more foci, the reflector (78) being orientated to substantially receive, onto its reflective surface, the annular beam or the plurality of beams of electromagnetic radiation and an inspection zone overlapping one of the one or more foci for eventual analysis of a particle or object (80) located within the inspection zone (located at focus F).
