PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biphenyl derivative and an organic electroluminescence device that adopts the same. SOLUTION: The biphenyl derivative is expressed by formula 1 (wherein R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>, Ar<SB>1</SB>, Ar<SB>2</SB>, Ar<SB>3</SB>and Ar<SB>4</SB>are not mutually related, and each are selected from a hydrogen atom, 1-20C alkyl, 5-20C cycloalkyl and substituted/non-substituted 6-20C aryl). This biphenyl derivative is a highly useful phosphorescent host material for the organic electroluminescence device, because of its thermal and crystal stabilities, an advanced solubility against an organic solvent and solution like thin-film formability as well as easy transition of energy from a metallic complex and common properties thereof.
