PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a solid catalytic component for olefin polymerization having higher activity to hydrogen than conventional ones and capable of maintaining the stereoregularity and yield of the resulting polymer at high levels, and to provide a catalyst containing the same. SOLUTION: The solid catalytic component for olefin polymerization is obtained by mutual suspension contact of (a) a magnesium compound, (b) a titanium(IV) halide, (c) an electron-donating compound of the general formula: R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>C(COOR<SP>3</SP>)<SB>2</SB>and (d) an electron-donating compound represented by a specific formula. The catalyst for olefin polymerization comprises the solid catalytic component, an organoaluminum compound of the general formula:R<SP>8</SP><SB>p</SB>AlQ<SB>3-p</SB>and an externally electron-donating compound.
