PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a soil treatment agent which makes hexavalent-chromium-containing soil harmless without producing a by-product possibly causing environmental pollution and to provide a soil treatment method using the same. SOLUTION: The soil treatment agent contains an iron oxide, e.g., iron monoxide (FeO) or a mixture of iron monoxide (FeO) and diiron trioxide (Fe<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>). The treatment agent may further contain a substance capable of releasing hydrogen, e.g., at least one substance selected from among sodium sulfite, sodium hydrogensulfite, ascorbic acid, and sodium ascorbate.
