PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which does not change color tones despite of addition of photosensitive material dyestuffs in a large amount in order to ensure the detection of a tip and can detect the tip at low cost. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with an image exposure section B which forms a latent image by exposing a laser beam having a light emission peak at 350 to 450 nm onto a heat developable recording material 5 by a scanning optical system having a laser beam source for generating the above laser beam, a heat developing section A which develops the material 5 formed with the latent image by heating the material to about 80 to 250°C, a cooling section D which lowers the material 5 subjected to heat treatment by the section A to a development stop temperature or below and a tip detecting sensor which is arranged at the passage point of the heat developable recording material, detects the shielding light of the laser beam emitted from the laser beam source and outputs the photosensitive material tip detection signal to the exposure section.
