<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and an image read area setting method for making a sensor for detecting pre-scan and original size unnecessary and for appropriately setting the image read area of an original loaded on an original plate. <P>SOLUTION: Whether or not facsimile transmission is commanded is discriminated (S110). In the case of YES, the original size preliminarily specified by a user is acquired (S210). In the case of NO, whether or not copy (duplicate of the document) is commanded is discriminated (S120). In the case of YES, processing for acquiring size of a recording medium is performed (S220). In the case of NO, it becomes standby for execution of the other processing (S230). Then, the image read area of the reading surface of the original platform is set based on the size of the original or the size of the recording medium acquired in procedures of the processing (S300).
