<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for correctly identifying unknown parameters such as a damping coefficientζof a hydraulic servo system, a stationary gain K or a time constant T by using the input and output signals u, y of a hydraulic servo system in operation without stopping equipment. <P>SOLUTION: The relationship between the input and the output of the hydraulic servo system which is the object of identification is expressed by a state transition equation without including unknown parameters and a state equation consisting of an output equation including the unknown parameters to be identified. The unknown parameters are decided by constituting an estimator by using this state equation, and the input u and the output y of the object of identification so that a square integration error of the estimated output y<SB>p</SB>of this estimator and the output y of the object of identification is minimized.
