PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an instrument for detecting slag in a casting facility in which the pouring of molten metal into a tundish from a ladle is performed with a shroud box molten metal pouring system. SOLUTION: In the slag detecting instrument provided with an infrared camera 1 and an operation processor 10 to detect the slag in the casting facility using the shroud box molten metal pouring system, an image treatment is applied to pick-up image of molten steel stream in the shroud box from the infrared camera 1 to make a bright and dark pattern in a detected objective range. A pattern matching between this bright and dark pattern and a standard bright and dark pattern, is performed and it is decided whether the slag is made to flow or not based on the result of this pattern matching.
