Apparatus for cutting the top sheet (4) of a laminate uses a cutter blade (3) controlled by a plotter using ultrasound scanning. The cutter is fitted with an ultrasound sensor (7) which compares the sound field with a second field to produce a control signal. Scanning using the second field identifies interference produced by the plotter and is carried out by a second sensor (9) mounted on the opposite side of the sheet from the cutter.
