IMAGE PREDICTIVE ENCODING METHOD AND APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more efficiently encode image data by removing redundancy within a block in comparison with conventional technology.

SOLUTION: Image data divided into blocks are converted into conversion coefficients of two-dimensional columns, the converted conversion coefficients of the two-dimensional columns are quantized to obtain quantized conversion coefficients. A predictive block to predict a quantized DC coefficient of the current block is adaptively selected from either an upper block or a left block adjacent to the current block, and the quantized DC coefficient of the current block is predicted from the quantized DC coefficient of the adjacent block adaptively selected from either the upper block or the left block, to find a DC coefficient predictive error. A quantized AC coefficient of the current block is predicted from a quantized AC coefficient of the block selected for DC coefficient prediction, to find an AC coefficient predictive error. Variable length encoding is applied to the DC coefficient predictive error and the AC coefficient predictive error.
