TAPE DRIVE SYSTEM, RECORDING AND REPRODUCING METHOD, AND RECORDING MEDIUM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance security against illegal use of a tape drive system. SOLUTION: A memory capable of storing management information is mounted on a tape cassette. In this memory, a MIC logical format type indicating the format state (unformatted/formatted) of the magnetic tape is stored. Then consistency of the format state that the MIC logical format type indicates with a format state estimated from a data readout result to the magnetic tape is judged. When the consitency is not obtained, it is decided some illegal act has been done to the tape casette, and then control is performed to limit recording/reproducing operation.
