PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for effectively quenching a cotyloid part of a metallic component with a cotyloid shape in a cooling water tank, by solving a problem that cooling water is not distributed to the cotyloid part in the step of quenching the component, and to provide a device therefor. SOLUTION: The quenching device comprises a water tank (3) provided with a bottom nozzle (4), a side nozzle (5) and a suction port (6), top piping (8) for supplying the cooling water from above, a fork-lift means (9) for carrying the component and a means for supplying and draining the cooling water. The quenching method comprises using the above quenching device, arranging a cooling water introduction pipe (7) inside the cotyloid part of the component, which is a cylinder with a funnel-shaped top part having such a diameter as to make cross-sectional areas of internal and external circulating water paths in the cotyloid part to be quenched approximately equal, and supplying water thereto from the top piping.
