FRAME PROTOCOL AND SCHEDULING SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for scheduling information which has been or should be transmitted. SOLUTION: Serial data such as shared data, private data or control data are sent from broadcast services (BS) to a broadcast server for transmission to a client device (CD). Data are scheduled for transmission based on weighted precedence including QoS metrics. Transmission frames are arranged according to a frame protocol that includes provisions for a table-of-contents indexing system for the shared data. Packets of the shared data are formatted based on criteria that is known by the particular BS and corresponding application (APL) that is resident on the CD. The CD receives the table of contents at a transport layer, and notifies the APL of data that will be available in the next frame. The APL submits prioritized requests to the transport layer to request data. The data from the transport layer are deserialized by handlers for each APL. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
