PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine and its control method for improving performance by setting the optimal valve timing by making the most of pressure pulsation of suction-exhaust in various operation states. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine has a valve timing variable means for varying at least one valve timing of an intake valve and an exhaust valve according to a command, a pressure detecting means for detecting intake pipe internal pressure and exhaust pipe internal pressure of the internal combustion engine pulsing according to opening-closing operation of the intake valve and the exhaust valve and operation of a piston, a valve timing setting means for setting the valve timing on the basis of the size relationship between the intake pipe internal pressure and the exhaust pipe internal pressure detected by the pressure detecting means and a valve timing output means for outputting the command to the valve timing variable means in response to the preset valve timing.
