PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read an image from the same area without increasing the time required for image reading in an image read device where the relative positional relation between an image sensor and a read target position is different between the case of reading a color image and the case of reading a monochrome image. SOLUTION: When a user specifies a color mode, the image read device preliminarily transfers a read head 11 to a position (FB_color position, ADF_color position) where a first read target position r coincides with a read start position p1 or p2 on the original. When the user specifies a monochrome mode, the image read device preliminarily transfers the read head 11 to a position (FB_B/W position, ADF_B/W position) where a second read target position bw coincides with the read start position p1 or p2 on the original.
