PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dichroic dye combining excellent stability and solubility which is applicable to a liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: The inventive dichroic dye is a compound represented by formula (I) ( wherein A is a group represented by formula (I-1) or (I-2) )( in formula (I), when A is a group represented by formula (I-1), B is -COOR<SP>2</SP>or -CH=C(CN)COOR<SP>4</SP>, and when A is a group represented by formula (I-2), B is -NR<SP>6</SP>R<SP>7</SP>) and a compound represented by formula (V) ( wherein OR<SP>9</SP>is -OC<SB>4</SB>H<SB>8</SB>F, a group represented by formula (V-1), or a group represented by formula (V-2) ).
