Combustion engine (1) operating method in which a fuel-air mixture is burnt in a combustion chamber (4) of a cylinder (3). The engine is operated with a lean air-fuel mixture and a signal is determined that represents uneven engine operation. The signal is monitored and counter measures are taken when the signal exceeds an operating limit for the engine.
