PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the fuel consumption by elongating an engagement state of a lock-up clutch. SOLUTION: When a car velocity V is lowered and engine speed R is lowered to R<SB>0</SB>, in an engagement state of a lock-up clutch of a torque converter and in a coast state of a vehicle, a supply limit hydraulic pressure Pm of a mechanical oil pump falls to below a necessary engagement pressure P<SB>0</SB>necessary for the lock-up clutch to keep the engagement state, and the engine revolutions are suddenly lowered as shown by a broken line of time t3-t4. And so, the fuel supply is restarted to keep the idling revolutions. Here, the engagement pressure is increased by P3-P2 by an electric oil pump before the engine speed is lowered to R<SB>0</SB>, a timing for bringing an engine into an idling state is delayed from a conventional time t3 to t5, and a fail cut area can be enlarged by just that much.
