PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control excessive increase of initial engaged friction coefficient of a brand-new clutch while maintainingμ-V torque characteristic with a positive slope, in a friction plate for the wet type clutch. SOLUTION: The friction plate comprises a core plate 2, and a friction material 3 connected on both sides of the core plate 2. The friction material 3 is provided with multiple friction material segments 4 which are arranged to form primary oil grooves 6 between every friction material segment. Secondary oil grooves 7 are formed on the surface of each friction material segment 4 by means of engraving, and a pore ratio of the friction material 3 in the vicinity (a) of the secondary oil groove 7 is set to be smaller than that at the other part (b) of the friction material 3.
