PROCESS FOR PRODUCING GLYCOPROTEIN HAVING ANIMAL TYPE SUGAR CHAIN

It is intended to provide plant cells and a plant producing a glycoprotein having an animal type sugar chain. These plant cells have been transformed by a gene encoding at least one protein which has a sugar chain addition system, whereby sialic acid can be added to the nonreducing end of a sugar chain of a glycoprotein, and is selected from the group consisting of sialic acid synthase, CMP-sialic acid synthase (CSS) and CMP-sialic acid transporter (CST). In a typical case, the above glycoprotein having an animal type sugar chain is a heterogenous glycoprotein the sugar chain of which contains a core sugar chain and an outer sugar chain. The core sugar chain essentially comprises a plural number of mannose and acetylglucosamine molecules, while the outer sugar chain has a terminal sugar chain moiety containing a nonreducing end galactose.
