<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a header restoring method with which updating of reference information is requested in accordance with a state of an error of a header-restored packet. <P>SOLUTION: In a header decompression apparatus 709, a header decompressing part 703 refers to reference information in a reference information managing part 707 to decompress a compressed header of the packet received by a packet receiving part 704. An error detecting part 702 detects a CRC error in the packet with its header decompressed by the packet receiving part 704, and only a correct packet is outputted from a packet output part 701. A successive decompression error count part 705 counts the number of successive errors detected by the error detecting part 702, and a successive decompression success count part 706 counts the number of successive decompression successes. By referring to the counted numbers, an updating request part 708 transmits an update request to the transmission side as needed.
