PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which has both superior travel durability and a superior electromagnetic transducing characteristics. SOLUTION: Used is the magnetic recording medium which is constituted by providing on a base one or more magnetic layers containing ferromagnetic powder and a binder. The medium is characterized in that a center line average roughness Ra of the magnetic layer measured with a laser interferometer is from 1 to 3 nm, a skewness Rsk is 0 or more and less than 1. 0, and a maximum difference Rz of elevation of peak/valley is 40 nm or less.
