The headlamp unit has a rear reflector (2) enclosing a light source (1) and a light shield (3), brought into the path of the lower part of the light beam reflected from the rear reflector upon selection of the fog or poor weather illumination function, so that a region of the road surface directly ahead of the automobile is subjected to a lesser illumination level than the remainder of the road surface illuminated by the headlamp beam. At least partial surfaces of the side of the light shield receiving the headlamp beam are reflective to reflecting the light back onto the rear reflector, a pattern of holes (4) allowing passage of light for weak illumination of the road surface directly ahead of the automobile.
