A catalyst for reforming a hydrocarbon, characterized in that it comprises any of (1) a composite oxide having a composition represented by the following formula: aM.bNi.cMg.dO wherein a, b, c and d denote molar ratios, and a + b + c = 1, 0.02 <= a <= 0.99, 0.01 <= b <= 0.99, 0.01 <= c <= 0.97, and d is a number required for oxygen atoms to achieve the electrical neutrality with cationic elements, and M is at least one element selected from among Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, Al and Si, (2) a composite oxide prepared by adding at least one oxide selected from silica, alumina and a zeolite to one or both of said composite oxide and an oxide containing Ni and Mg and (3) a composite oxide prepared by adding at least one oxide selected from silica, alumina and a zeolite to an oxide containing Ni and Mg, and allowing the resultant mixed oxide to carry a platinum group metal; and a method for reforming a hydrocarbon comprising using the catalyst. |
