<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately form an image even if there is no recording medium on a selected tray, in terms of an image forming apparatus which has a plurality of trays for holding the recording medium and selects one of the trays so as to form the image on the recording medium held on the selected tray. <P>SOLUTION: When a copying operation is performed (S1: Y), firstly, the first tray is selected (S2): and when there is no recording paper on the first tray (S3: N), the second tray is selected (S5). In spite of the presence of the recording paper on the second paper (S6: Y), when the recording paper, which is held on the second tray, is not equal in size to the recording paper held on the first tray (S8: N), the effect of a change in size is displayed (S11); and only when a user permits recording via panel operations (S13: Y), the recording is performed (S14).
