PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-step index plastic optical fiber that has a small transmission loss, a small deterioration of the transmission loss due to the moist heat, proper mechanical characteristics and moreover properly balanced various performances. SOLUTION: The optical fiber consists of independent polymer or copolymer of polymeric monomer containing (meth)acrylic ester, having alicyclic hydrogen carbonate, and which are laminated concentrically for 3 or more layers, of which mutual diffraction indexes differ. In the multi-step index plastic optical fiber, with the diffraction index lowering from the inside layer toward the outside layer, in a manner of two-dimensional distribution.
