PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorber having superior shock absorbability without enlarging a shock absorber itself. SOLUTION: This shock absorber 1 comprises a cylindrical casing 2, a bar-shaped rod 3 advanceable and retractable in the axial direction of the casing 2 and receiving the impact at an outer part of the casing 2, a pressure chamber 4, a piston 5 mounted on a tip of the rod 3 in the pressure chamber 4, and the working fluid 6 packed in the pressure chamber 4. The piston 5 is composed of a rod-side member 10 and a tip-side member 11 fixed in an overlapped state, and an O-ring 12 fitted to a groove formed on a side face of the tip-side member 11, and both faces of the piston 5 are communicated by a rod-side orifice 13, a tip-side orifice 14, and a communication passage 15. As a channel is elongated by the existence of a communication passage 15, and the resistance generated when the working fluid flows in the channel 16 is increased, the shock absorbing performance of this shock absorber 1 is improved.
