From the results of dispersion measurement the substance content influencing optical characteristics is determined. Only partial interferograms are used from the full short-coherence interferogram G(T). Dispersion measurement employs a short scan about a selected position, especially the virtual position of the dispersion measurement. Short coherence interferometry is used in the eye. The position of a reference mirror (14) is fixed relative to the eye (7) with the aid of an end support (63) and is adjusted by means of a concave mirror (30). Orientation of the eye relative to the measurement beam (5) of an interferometer, is effected with the help of a target beam (32). A modified Michelson-Interferometer is used as the interferometer. Movement of the reference mirror is registered using a calibration interferometer.
