PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information recording and reproducing device and method which requires only low power consumption, hardly generates heat and can record information at high speed. SOLUTION: In a scanning probe type information recorder, an information recording method, an information reproducing device and an information reproducing method, an elastic wave generation element 22 for generating an elastic wave is provided on a small probe 21, but a heating means is not provided on that. The energy of an elastic wave emitted from the small probe 21 is utilized to form a pit (cavity) in shape, recording information. In addition, the energy of the elastic wave emitted from the small probe 21 is utilized to reproduce information according to the existence/absence of a pit on a recording medium 24 adjacent to the point of the small probe 21.
