PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read stimulated luminescence emitted from a stimulable phosphor sheet in optimum timing even when ambient temperature is changed in a radiation image reader. SOLUTION: Uniform light from a reference light source 80 is received by a solid-state image pickup element 52 just before a radiation image is read by the element 52, and the timing of a sampling pulse applied to the element 52 is automatically adjusted so that the SN ratio of respective pixel signals outputted from respective photoelectric conversion elements may be maximum. Thus, the influence of the change of the ambient temperature of the element 52 is restrained to be minimum, whereby the stimulated luminescence R from the stimulable phosphor sheet IP can be read.
