<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display wherein alignment control of liquid crystal molecules can be easily performed without using a rubbing method and to provide its manufacturing method. <P>SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display of a horizontal alignment system having first and second substrates 1 and 2 and a liquid crystal layer 3 injected between the substrates and wherein directors of liquid crystal molecules 14 in each pixel region are rotated in a plane parallel to the the surfaces of the substrates opposed to each other, four sides of each pixel region are enclosed by parallel columnar protrusion parts 15 formed on the surface of one substrate and parallel columnar protrusion parts 16 formed on the surface of the other substrate and side surfaces 10b of the columnar protrusion parts 15 and 16 are made hydrophobic and the surfaces of the substrates are made hydrophilic. The manufacturing method of the liquid crystal display has a step for applying a photosensitive resin on the surfaces of the first and the second substrates and then exposing and developing the photosensitive resin to form the columnar protrusion parts, a step for applying a hydrophobic coating film which can be subjected to hydrophilization treatment on the entire surfaces of the substrates on which the columnar protrusion parts are formed and a step for subjecting the hydrophobic coating film except the side surfaces of the columnar protrusion parts to hydrophilization treatment. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
