Motor vehicle steer-by-wire steering system in which vehicle steering is controlled using feedback between the forces acting on the wheels and the inputs to the control system by use of a simulation arrangement. If the simulation arrangement fails the feedback control loop is interrupted. The steering condition just before the interruption is taken as the correct controlling value and is maintained after the interruption to prevent incorrect panic responses by the driver affecting the vehicle-driving behavior.
