Methods and apparatus for the remote coagulation of blood using high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) are provided. A remote hemostasis method comprises identifying a site (72, 82) of internal bleeding and focusing therapeutic ultrasound energy (50, 52, 54, 58, 92) on the site (72, 82), the energy (50, 52, 54, 58, 92) being focused through an intervening tissue. Hemostasis enhancing agents may be introduced to the site (72, 82) for actuation by the ultrasound energy (50, 52, 54, 58, 92).
