An envelope flap separator has a supple component (12A) for its active zone, having an edge (38) on a level with the envelope transporting table (16). The supple component is made from steel wire of small diameter, overmoulded with a plastic material, and it is connected to an adjacent rigid component (12B) by a fixing such as a plastic slider or rail, or by a hinge.
