A beverage containing cartridge 1 is disclosed which carries a code 320 which is read upon insertion of the cartridge into a beverage preparation machine. The code gives the operational parameters required to prepare the particular beverage in the container. A processor in the machine has stored in its memory variables for each operational parameter, eg for water temperature, beverage volume, flow rate etc, and, after reading the code, the processor automatically selects the appropriate variables for the brewing cycle. Once selected, the cycle is initiated manually. This system allows for a greater degree of control of the preparation process and for new beverages to be prepared by the machine because the operational parameters are set without direct reference to the beverage type. The beverage preparation machine can also store information about the type of beverage cartridge in its memory. |
