A device for melting and casting comprises a melt crucible (2) for receiving the melted material, a heater (3) for heating the melted material in the crucible, a pyrometer (8) for determining the temperature of the melted material, and a control unit (4) for controlling the melting and casting process depending on the determined melted material temperature. The control unit has a data bank with several material-specific parameter sets each having parameters for configuring the pyrometer.
