An indexing/de-indexing system, designed to permit connection and separation of fixed (1a) and rotary (1b) sub-assemblies, has a first sub-assembly with a mobile actuator (5) that can move relative to a lock-release mechanism (7) engaging with a drive plate (6) on a second sub-assembly, allowing the plate to rotate about its axis (BB) when released. The actuator can be mounted on a moving support, and the lock/release mechanism has a pivoting catch that engages with a recess in the drive plate (6) to lock it, moving away from the plate to release it and allow it to be rotated by a drive motor (3). The drive is designed to rotate workpiece holders (8, 9) on a barrel forming part of an automatic welding installation.
